A joker is helpful, with limits
Under NMJL rules, jokers can substitute only within identical pungs, kongs, quints, or sextets that the card permits. They cannot complete a single or a pair, and they cannot stand in for tiles in a non-identical grouping. That distinction matters because a hand with a missing pair may be harder to finish than it first appears. Use the current official rules for joker exchanges and other special situations.
The joker substitutes for a 4 crack in this pung. It cannot substitute in a single or pair. Your card must permit the group.
Explore groups and jokers ↗Good table manners make learning easier
Name your discards, keep your rack easy for you to read, and give others time to think. Avoid reaching into someone else’s tiles. When teaching games pause for a question, listen along: the answer may help you next turn. Agree in advance about whether the table is practicing or playing competitively.
You can be ready without knowing everything
Being ready for a beginner class means being willing to try. You do not need an expensive set, a group of experienced friends, or a perfect memory. Check the class listing for what to bring before purchasing supplies. For Mingos & Mahj, those details will be shared when dates open.
A small practice plan
Review the tile families today. Tomorrow, read one card line slowly with the official card in front of you. Then revisit the Charleston sequence and take our beginner quiz. When you sit down for guided play, bring one question you want answered. Confidence comes from repeated, supported practice.
A QUICK CONFIDENCE CHECK
